Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially declared a major shift in his nation’s foreign policy, stating that Canada’s long-standing economic reliance on the United States is now a liability that must be addressed. In a 10-minute video address, Carney made it clear that the current approach to the U.S. is no longer sustainable for the Canadian economy. According to Politico, this move marks a significant departure for the Canadian government.
Carney is done waiting for things to go back to the way they used to be. He emphasized that Canada has been a loyal partner for a long time, standing alongside the U.S. in conflicts ranging from the World Wars to Afghanistan. However, “The U.S. has fundamentally changed its approach to trade, raising its tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression.” These tariffs have hit workers in the steel and auto industries hard.
