Can you go to work with Covid-19? Rules and advice on working with coronavirus

While lockdown feels like a thing of the past by this point, many people across the UK are still contracting Covid-19.

If you have taken a Covid test and it came back positive, you may be confused about whether you should still go to work or not. It's important to note that if a test comes back positive but you have no symptoms, it is still highly likely that you are infected and can therefore pass it on to others.

According to government advice, many people with Covid-19 will no longer be infectious to others after five days. Because of this it is highly recommended that if you have a positive Covid-19 test result you should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for five days after you took the test.

While there is no legal obligation to stay at home, it is highly recommended to work from home wherever possible. If you cannot work from home, the government advises that you talk to your employer about other options available to you.

Different workplaces will have different policies in place if one of their employees contracts Covid-19 and it's best to clear it up with them. Similarly, the NHS advises that people with Covid avoid contact with others for five days while also avoiding people at higher risk from Covid for 10 days, even if they are vaccinated.

You can reduce the risk of spreading the virus to other people by doing the following:

  • Avoid contact with anyone you know who is at higher risk of experiencing severe illness from Covid-19 infection, such as those with a compromised immune system.
  • Limit close contact with other people outside your households - avoid crowded, enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.
  • Wear a well-fitting face covering if you have to be in close contact with people or enter a crowded place.
  • Was hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitiser
