THE Commonwealth Games are set to return to Glasgow in 2026.
Scotland's largest city has stepped in after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out of hosting duties due to rising costs.
The Scottish Government has agreed to host the event after holding talks with Commonwealth Games Australia.
It is understood the event will come at no cost to the public purse in Scotland, with funding coming from the compensation paid to the Commonwealth Games Federation after Australia pulled out.
Glasgow last hosted the event in 2014 and attracted a record-breaking number of volunteer applications.
But will volunteers be needed for the 2026 Commonwealth Games?
While the Scottish Government has agreed to shoulder hosting duties, it is understood it will be a scaled-down version of the games with only 10 sports on the agenda.
As such, it's likely that significantly fewer volunteers will be required.
A record-breaking 50,811 people from all over the world applied to become volunteers back in 2014. The Glasgow Games also allowed 16-year-olds to apply, and 18% of applicants were aged between 16-18.
However, only 15,000 volunteers were ultimately required.
The last Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham in 2022 saw 13,000 volunteers help run the events.
Birmingham's volunteer program offered roles in areas such as event services, accreditation, transport, sport, and media.
The vast majority of roles required no previous experience or qualifications with volunteers receiving full training ahead of the Games.
How can I apply?
Volunteer applications are yet to open although they are usually submitted via the Commonwealth Games website.
They are likely to open next year with roles offered and training delivered a few months before the Games commence.
