Campaigners to hold birthday party for People's Palace and Winter Gardens

A celebration of 124 years of the People's Palace and Winter Gardens will be taking place this weekend.

Campaigners are planning on gathering outside the historic venue on January 22 for the event.

Friends of the People's Palace and Winter Gardens plan on wrapping the building with a yellow ribbon and are encouraging people to write a birthday card with a message to Glasgow City Council which will be left on the fence.

The group has been campaigning for the historic building to be 'repaired, restored and re-opened since it was closed 'indefinitely' in 2018. While the People's Palace was able to open briefly while covid restrictions allowed, the glasshouse has remained closed due to safety concerns.

There will also be live music and cake to mark the celebration which will also be part of Gray Day - honouring artist and writer Alasdair Gray.

Alasdair Gray's exhibition The Continuous Glasgow Show opened the Winter Gardens to the public for the first time since its closure for demolition in 1966.

Friends of the People's Palace and Winter Gardens said: "Alasdair was on the staff of the People’s Palace for almost a year, producing a series of contemporary Glasgow portraits for the museum collection. He also designed the logo for the Friends of the People’s Palace in 1977 and again for its reincarnation in 2018.

"To his credit, Alasdair in the last year of his life twice refused the Freedom of the City on the grounds that he disagreed with the way the city had neglected the People’s Palace.

"The People’s Palace was built on the ground where the great Franchise Demonstrations of 1832, 1868, and 1884 took place and its construction was a triumph for the Liberal Party, which had governed Glasgow for most of the 19th century. Subsequent administrations have neglected it, and we will be looking for more solid political support in the forthcoming local elections in May.

"We are determined to see the building repaired, renewed, and restored so future generations can both enjoy it and immerse themselves in the history and culture of Glasgow as well as basking in the healing warmth of the Winter Gardens."

Dr Elspeth King, founder of Friends of the People’s Palace, added: "These are the days for which the People’s Palace was built: sharp, cold, freezing dull and gray. Walking into the Winter Gardens on a day like today would immediately lift your spirits, change your senses, and bathe you with warmth and happiness.

"Engaging with the museum exhibits offered the opportunity to think about what it means to be Glaswegian, looking back at past achievements and forward to future possibilities. This has been a facility available to Glaswegians and visitors for nearly a century and a quarter, and we will not see it lost. Freezing or not, we’ll be there on 22 January, singing to get the People’s Palace opened again.

Happy 124th Birthday People’s Palace will be kicking off at 12pm on Saturday, January 22 outside the People's Palace.
