Woman launches a 365-day debt payoff journey after her 21-year relationship collapses. Then the betrayal gets even worse: ‘It’s just ridiculous’

A woman named Miranda, known online as the creator behind “Debt Payoff Journey,” has been documenting her attempt to pay off more than $45,000 in debt over 365 days on TikTok. She started the project after learning that her partner of 21 years had been unfaithful.

Miranda said the affair had gone on for a decade with the same woman. She said the goal of her debt payoff plan is to eventually buy a home for herself and her children.

She posts daily videos where she updates followers on her progress. Each video includes a “micropayment” toward one of ten debts, calculated using engagement numbers from the previous post, along with any direct donations from viewers. On what she said was day 252 of the challenge, Miranda appeared visibly emotional in her video. She explained that she had not posted the previous day, which she said was unusual for her routine.

Missed post followed by news of a family loss

She told viewers, “I didn’t think I had any more tears to cry, but I’m gonna try to get through this.” She then said the reason she skipped day 251 was that she and her family had to put down their 13-year-old dog.

Miranda said the dog had been diagnosed with diabetes a few months earlier. She said that despite efforts to manage the condition, “her little body just couldn’t take anymore, and she’s in a better place.” She added that she and her family “weren’t ready to say goodbye yet.”

Despite the missed post, Miranda said her followers still engaged with her content and supported her financially. She said, “You guys have invested just as much in this as I have, and I couldn’t do without you guys.” Other creators have also opened up about debt tied to painful personal circumstances, including one woman who found herself 30K in debt after divorcing an abusive ex.

She then reviewed the engagement numbers from her prior video, reporting “2,076 likes, 485 comments, 268 shares, 197 saves, and 121 new friends,” for a total of 3,147 engagements. Based on her stated rate of a quarter of a cent per engagement, she said her personal contribution for the day was $7.87.

Miranda said this amount was added to donations from viewers, which totaled $246.38. She described the contributions as “absolutely incredible” and thanked her audience for their support.

Combining her own contribution with viewer donations, Miranda announced that the day’s total payment was $254.25. An on-screen graphic in the video confirmed the payment had been scheduled for Thursday, August 1. She said this brought the balance on her seventh debt, an auto loan, down to $17,112.54.

Miranda shared a short-term goal of reducing the auto loan balance to $15,000 by the end of August. She said that with 34 days remaining, this would require a minimum daily micropayment of $62.13. She said, “Let’s see if we can do it.” Small recurring balances are a common way debt can build up quietly, as seen in another case involving a spending habit that led to major debt.

At the end of the video, Miranda posed a question to her audience, asking how many loads of laundry they do on average each week. She shared her own household’s habits, saying they do about one load a day, plus one or two loads of blankets on weekends. She said, “So I would say on average we’re at 9 or 10 loads a week,” adding that “it’s just ridiculous” how laundry adds up.

Miranda closed the video by thanking her viewers again and inviting them to share their answers in the comments. According to her social media profile, Miranda has 173.4K followers and 2.3 million likes. Her bio lists her debt figures as “10/26: $45,714.74” and “8/12: $22,006.51,” with a total of $23,708.23 paid off so far. The bio also states, “This is my only account!”

The comment section was largely sympathetic, with many followers focusing on the loss of Miranda’s dog rather than her financial update. One commenter wrote, “Lovely lady you are amazing, you will get through this xx,” while another added, “I pray that you will find yourself in your best season ever soon. I’m sorry for your loss. Dogs are family too “

Several followers shared their own experiences of losing a pet. One commenter posted a photo of her own dog alongside the message, “Oh man, I’m so sorry for the loss of your sweet pup we had to let our girl go last summer and it was just heartbreaking. She was also 14.”

Another widely engaged comment, posted with a photo of a golden retriever, read, “My girl was waiting for your pup at the rainbow bridge, I’m so sorry x.”
