Cameron Carter-Vickers is captain material, says former Celtic star

Since Callum McGregor took over the captain’s armband in 2021, he has marshalled the Hoops to their eighth domestic treble along with a Scottish Cup and League title double last season.

His predecessor, Scott Brown, captained the side for 11 of his 14 years at Celtic Park, winning 22 trophies and cementing his status as a club great.

And former Celt Andy Walker has highlighted another name from the current crop he believes could follow in their footsteps: Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Walker told Go Radio: “If you hear Brendan Rodgers talking about the potential seriousness of an injury to Carter-Vickers, you have to be ready to maybe take his place. That’s why Welsh and Trusty were given the minutes (against Falkirk). That’s the last thing you want.

“He is a great leader. He is sort of captain material, Carter-Vickers. The last thing you want is for him to be out of the team in these big games coming up.”

The US international is currently nursing a foot injury and is a major doubt for Saturday’s Scottish Premiership game with St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.

Manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed the metatarsal issue on Sunday and revealed the 26-year-old is set to be assessed this week.

It is uncertain whether the defender will return in time for Celtic’s Champions League trip to Borussia Dortmund on 1 October.
