Cambuslang Rangers are within touching distance of the West of Scotland Conference B title – but co-boss Billy Campbell insists nothing is won yet.
Should Rangers beat Glasgow United at home on Saturday and rivals Gartcairn do anything other than win against Kello Rovers, Campbell’s side will be crowned champions. It would be their first title win in five years.
Camby are five points clear of their Airdrie rivals in second place, and with two games in hand, but Campbell says they won’t talk about triumphs until they have silverware secured.
Campbell and co-boss Paul McColl expect business to go as usual this weekend, but conceded that they are on the verge of a spectacular season.
He said: “Mathematically we can win the title this weekend, depending on how Gartcairn get on.
“It’s still in our hands, and we know what we need to do if everybody else wins every game, so we just need to keep doing our stuff.
“If we get a bonus off of anybody else that’s great, but if not, we need a win and a draw out of what’s left to try and get it done.
“We’ve got a couple of games to do that, so it’s a case of taking it a week at a time, plugging away, and hopefully we can get it done as soon as we can.
“We’ve earned the right to put ourselves in this position, but it’s not done yet.
“If Gartcairn come away with anything other than a win then yes, we win the league, but we’re not expecting Gartcairn to do that.”
Cambuslang thumped Royal Albert 6-0 on Saturday to leave them on the cusp of glory, with a hat-trick taking striker Scott Williamson to 48 for the season so far, ahead of his move to Queen’s Park next season.
Scott Anson bagged a double, and John Gemmell’s goal put him on 99 for the club.
Campbell added: “We played well at the weekend.
“We came out with a decent tempo, showing a wee bit of desire and professionalism. We’re trying to get the job done week by week.
“Scott once again got three goals, and he’s not far off 50, which is a phenomenal delivery in a single season.
“Big Anson got a couple and big John Gemmell got another as well, and he’s only one away from his 100 now, which is amazing.
“We’re really pleased with it.”
