Callum Wilson explains why 'dark cloud' has been lifted at Newcastle United

Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson believes a 'dark cloud has been lifted' at the club since PIF's takeover and Eddie Howe's appointment at St James' Park.

The Magpies climbed into the top four with a statement victory over Tottenham Hotspur in North London on Sunday. Newcastle have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season - losing just one of their first 12 games in the Premier League, and have collected four wins from their last five.

Wilson has sensed a shift in momentum, especially with the atmosphere inside St James' Park, and the 30-year-old believes the supporters have ultimately got what they wanted since the takeover in October last year.

"The atmosphere from before the takeover, the atmosphere on the day of the takeover. But then since that appointment of the manager, staying up and this season, it's unbelievable," Wilson told talkSPORT.

"I'd say the Arsenal game last season was probably one of the best atmospheres I've played in during my football career. I've not had many nights like that and the result was also impressive.

"I just feel that the fans were waiting for that dark cloud to be lifted. The owners had gone, they were happy with that, but they still weren't happy with the manager that was in place.

"And then now we've appointed somebody else and ultimately they've got what they wanted. They've got a team that's working hard and playing well for them."

Howe has propelled Newcastle to new heights since succeeding Steve Bruce in November 2021. He steered the Magpies away from the relegation mire last term to finish 11th place last term, and has built on their strong form in the second half of the previous campaign in the 2022/23 season.

Wilson never doubted that Howe would have any trouble conveying his ideas to the squad and believes the former AFC Bournemouth boss is a great 'fit' for both the squad and the club as a whole.

"I know from my history of working with him, he's able to work with a squad of English players, or a squad that's probably not got a team of unbelievable individuals, but who can play well together and it was just about having a direction," Wilson explained.

"We had a great squad of players, we just needed a little bit more guidance, direction and a philosophy and style of play, and probably more confidence from the manager and in the manager.

"That with the fans and everyone who is on board and is buying into everything we're trying to do here, it's only been a positive appointment. For us as a squad we're delighted to have him, I'm delighted personally to work with him again."
