Callum Wilson closing in on England World Cup squad place as Abraham and Toney 'left out'

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson could be one step closer to a place on the plane to Qatar according to reports this morning. England manager Gareth Southgate will reveal his squad for the 2022 World Cup this afternoon, with Wilson in the running to join United team-mates Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier in the group.

There has been much speculation over who Southgate will pick, particularly in the forward areas, with back-up to captain Harry Kane a key talking point. Wilson has suffered terrible luck with injuries over the past two seasons, but has put himself firmly into contention with a series of impressive performances for Eddie Howe's side in recent months.

The 30-year-old has bagged six goals in 10 Premier League appearances this season, including a brace in front of the watching Southgate in United's 4-0 home win over Aston Villa at the end of October. Now reports suggest that two of his rivals for the a place in the World Cup squad - Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham - will not be heading to Qatar, increasing Wilson's chances of a seat on the plane.
