Call the Midwife fans have been given an exciting update on the BBC period drama after a new photo was shared of two cast members kicking off filming on the new episodes. The picture, posted on Monday, April 25, showed actresses Jenny Agutter (Sister Julienne) and Linda Bassett (Nurse Crane) back on set in Nonnatus House with a clapperboard teasing the start of filming for the 2022 Christmas special and series 12.
In a post on the Call the Midwife official Facebook page, it was announced that filming had commenced on the twelfth series and it was also teased that more sneak peeks from the set could be released later this week. It read: "BREAKING NEWS!! Call the Midwife begins filming for Series 12! Hello all! WE’RE BACK!!! We bring you this picture straight from the Nonnatus House set, where our team began filming again just a few hours ago on a brand new Christmas Special and Series 12 of Call the midwife!
"This year Jenny Agutter (Sr Julienne) and Linda Bassett (Nurse Crane) were there to provide us with the traditional clapperboard shot that marks the beginning of the first scene of the new season :-). We also hope to bring you some exclusive festive sneak peeks from our Poplar Christmas set later this week….. so stay tuned! xxx"
Co-star Stephen McGann, who plays Dr Turner in the midwife series, re-tweeted the picture adding: "Aaaaaand they're off! xxx #CallTheMidwife #Series12". It's fair to say, fans were ecstatic with the announcement that series 12 was underway and thousands responded to the social media posts to share their delight.
Susan Seddon tweeted: "Brilliant news to hear that #CallTheMidwife S12 has started filming. Can't wait to follow the updates over the next few months. Never want this wonderful show to end" and Chloe Stothers added: "BEST NEWS EVER!!!!! YAY".

The last series provided an intense finale with long-running Call the Midwife character's Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) and Sister Julienne's (Jenny Agutter) lives hanging in the balance when they were caught up in a train crash. Many fans were anticipating a heart breaking end for one of the much-loved characters - who have both been part of the BBC drama since it first aired in 2012 - but breathed a sigh of relief when they both made full recoveries.
Call the Midwife will return with a new Christmas special later this year and series 12 will air in 2023. All episodes of Call the Midwife are currently available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.
