Call the Midwife Christmas Special first look sends fans reeling as filming starts

Fans of Call The Midwife have been left delighted after BBC bosses shared a very festive photo from the set as filming gets going on the new series and Christmas special.

While it has always been both compelling and heart warming viewing since its debut a decade ago, the last series saw the drama go up a few notches, with its penultimate episode giving the programme its most tense cliff hanger to date as Stephen McGann and Jenny Agutter's much loved characters Sister Julienne and Doctor Turner were involved in a train crash.

Credits rolled as the main protagonists were left looking on in horror as their carriage careered off the tracks after the driver suffered a medical emergency at the wheel. BBC viewers' hearts were left in their mouths, as they were kept waiting a week to see if both survived.

*SPOILER ALERT* Both did, but at different times of the finale it looked like both might meet their maker, as the Doctor was left nursing an injury and Sister Julienne suffered a suspected heart attack.

After all of that drama there was great news for loyal Call The Midwife fans when it was confirmed there will be at least another two series of the show, along with respective Christmas specials. Cameras are now rolling on new Call the Midwife episodes, with the news confirmed this week.

And, on Thursday bosses of the hit drama gave fans another look at what's been going on set, with a photo of Stephen and on-screen wife Laura Main, with the actors as their family. The tweet read: "Exclusive! It's a Turner Christmas on the #CallTheMidwife set!! #Christmas Special #Series 12 xxx"

Swift to react, fan replied: "Approximately 8 weeks ago after never watching an episode of @CallTheMidwife1 I decide to watch from the beginning (completely hooked). I have just started series 11 and I have loved every episode. Can’t wait for the Christmas special and series 12." A second reacted: "Oh dear it’s April and I’m wishing it’s Xmas so my favourite programmes on"
