Raven Software has confirmed that one of the most controversial items is on its way out of "Call of Duty: Warzone," ending months of back-and-forth balancing attempts aimed at fixing one of the game's most polarizing pieces of equipment.
The announcement has split the community right down the middle, much like the item itself has since its introduction.
'Call of Duty: Warzone' Is Removing This Controversial Item
Raven Software confirmed the change through a response to a player on the official developer account on X, stating plans to remove Grappling Hooks from standard Battle Royale and Resurgence playlists later this month.
The decision follows several earlier attempts to rein in the item rather than pull it outright, suggesting this removal comes only after those adjustments failed to solve the underlying problem.
Season 3 Reloaded had already lowered the Grappling Hook's Fire Sale price and adjusted how often it appeared through Scavenger contracts, while Season 4 introduced a Surveyor perk interaction that briefly revealed nearby players using the item on the minimap.
Season 4 Reloaded went even further, significantly reducing its speed and momentum mechanics based on fan feedback. None of those changes were apparently enough to keep the item in the game long term.
We plan on removing Grappling Hooks from standard Battle Royale and Resurgence playlists later this month.

What Makes the Grappling Hook Controversial?
According to GameRant's report, Raven has been fairly direct about why the item is finally being pulled. According to the studio, the Grappling Hook was enabling highly aggressive repositioning with limited risk attached, something Raven said it was not satisfied with in terms of its overall effect on "Warzone's" balance and metagame.
Reaction from the community has been split almost exactly along those same lines. Some players have welcomed the removal, arguing the Grappling Hook disrupted the natural flow of matches, made it too easy to challenge otherwise fortified positions, and was often buggy in how it actually functioned in game.
Streamer HusKerrs called it a great decision for both casual and competitive "Warzone," while others pushed back. One fan on X described Grappling Hooks as one of the most enjoyable additions the game has ever had, particularly on the Avalon map where the item paired well with elevated terrain and other traversal tools.
Some commenters also questioned why Raven chose to target Grappling Hooks specifically rather than addressing other balance concerns like Juggernaut Armor or the Specialist bonus.
Which Game Modes Will Retain Grappling Hook?
While Grappling Hooks are leaving standard Battle Royale and Resurgence playlists, the item will remain available in the separate Black Ops Royale mode going forward. Raven has not given players an exact removal date beyond confirming it will happen sometime later in August.
Reports suggest the change is likely to arrive through a smaller update rather than as part of Season 5 Reloaded, since that larger update isn't expected until early September in order to avoid overlapping with the "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4" beta period.
Once removed, Grappling Hooks will join the list of experimental mechanics Raven previously introduced through limited-time modes. This is a testing approach the studio has used before to try out unconventional traversal tools without committing to them permanently across every playlist.
Season 5 currently has the 50v50 Heavy Metal Heroes mode that will still have the Grappling Hook item available.
