Caithness-based energy engineering firm bought out

Salford-headquartered engineering group Langfields today completed an investment in Caithness-based renewable and nuclear energy engineering business JGC.

Established in 1972, the company designs and manufactures specialist equipment for regulated markets, including nuclear, wind, wave and tidal energy.

The deal will see Langfields take up a majority equity share in the business, while retaining the key skills of the JGC team.

Langfields managing director Neil Yates commented: “Langfields is undergoing significant growth driven by demand for new and clean energy sources, so the partnership with JGC brings together two of the UK’s leading manufacturers of clean energy equipment under one umbrella.

“JGC has a reputation for quality amongst its 80-strong workforce, and we expect this will augment our own reputation as one of the UK’s largest equipment manufacturers in the new energy markets.”

JGC managing director Will Campbell said: “After five decades of family ownership we are certain Langfields will support JGC to grow to the next level, and provide a platform for our staff to develop.

“We look forward to joining one of the fastest-growing engineering groups in the UK, and welcome the exciting opportunities in providing bespoke manufacturing and engineering services to the new energy future, while continuing to provide high-quality services to our long-standing customers.”

Langfields specialises in the design and manufacture of pressure containment equipment.

Its 450 staff are working on welding automation, supporting process industries across the globe.

In 2020 Langfields helped to build the world’s first nuclear fusion reactor, the Tokamak ST40.

The group is owned by Inverness-based Envoy & Partners. Since joining Envoy, Langfields has grown through the acquisition of specialist companies CPE Pressure Vessels, WH Capper, ECF Alloys and now JGC.

JGC was founded in 1972 by Jock Campbell.

In recent years, the business has been led by a management team that includes long-term employees and three of the founders’ sons – operating from facilities in Janetstown and Harpsdale.
