Busy Newark road closed again as another sinkhole appears

A busy Nottinghamshire road has been closed again after another sinkhole appeared. Part of Queen's Road in Newark collapsed on the morning of Wednesday, June 21, resulting in the closure of the road.

Nottinghamshire County Council, the area's highways authority, said it was investigating the cause of the damage. Previously, another sinkhole formed in the same stretch of road, closing the route from Lovers Lane roundabout to Northgate on April 18.

In response to the most recent sinkhole, a Nottinghamshire County Council spokesman said: “A further collapse of the carriageway occurred on Queen's Road, Newark, this morning, closing the road. This is subject to further investigation and repairs.

“We expect the section of Queens Road between Northgate and Lovers Lane to remain closed at this moment in time. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the closure, but our primary focus is the safety of residents and road users."

Drivers should avoid the area if possible and allow additional time for their journeys. It is not yet known how large the sinkhole is or whose responsibility it falls under.
