Bus driver still in hospital after 'disgusting' attack at St Johns Precinct

A bus driver remains in hospital after being attacked in Liverpool city centre.

The 64-year-old was taken to hospital with a head injury after being attacked by two men at St Johns Precinct on Elliot Street on Sunday, June 26. The attackers are reported to have fled in the direction of Lime Street Station and were seen on CCTV heading towards Skelhorne Street at around 5.35pm.

One witness described seeing police and paramedics attending to a man on the pavement as they went to catch the bus. A police cordon was put in place around the bus stop opposite Wetherspoons on Elliot Street on Sunday as emergency services worked at the scene.

Merseyside Police today confirmed that the bus driver remains in hospital following the attack and an investigation is ongoing. Dozens of messages have been shared on social media following the assault as ECHO readers wished the bus driver a speedy recovery.

Clare Louise Barrett said: "Disgusting thing to happen. Poor man just was doing his job."

Brian Harding said: "What's wrong with people, hope he makes a full recovery and the two rats are caught."

Karen Mcintyre said: "I hope the man is okay. It’s terrible x."

A police spokesperson said: "At around 5.35pm yesterday afternoon, Sunday 26 June, officers were called to a report of an assault in Liverpool City Centre. A 64-year-old man was found at St Johns Precinct on Elliot Street and taken to hospital with a head injury after he was assaulted by two men.

"It was reported that the men fled in the direction of Lime Street Station and were seen on CCTV heading towards Skelhorne Street at around 5.35pm. A scene was in place on Elliot Street whilst emergency services were in the area and an investigation is underway.
