A tragic incident unfolded in the Gilgit Baltistan region of northern Pakistan on Tuesday when a bus carrying approximately two dozen wedding guests plunged into the Indus River, resulting in the loss of at least 18 lives. The bus was en route to Chakwal, a city in Punjab province, when the accident occurred.
According to government officials, only one woman has been found alive so far and is currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital. Search and rescue operations are set to resume on Wednesday to locate any missing passengers.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, and authorities are awaiting the survivor's statement to shed light on the circumstances leading to the tragic event.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and urged rescue teams to intensify their efforts in locating any individuals who may still be unaccounted for.
Tragically, road accidents are a common occurrence in Pakistan, often attributed to inadequate infrastructure and a lack of adherence to traffic regulations and safety protocols. This latest incident adds to a string of similar tragedies, including two separate bus crashes in August that claimed the lives of 36 individuals and left many others injured.
