The duo behind Chinatown bao restaurant Bun House will open a new Shoreditch venue next month, one that will “take guests on a journey back to the hedonistic era of 1980s Hong Kong”, an announcement read.
Bun House Disco comes from husband and wife team Z He and Alex Peffly and will bring their fluffy bao to east London alongside a new wonton menu and cocktail list.
Located on the corner of Brick Lane, the restaurant is to open from lunch to “late night” (how late, we don’t yet know), with food giving way to more of a nightclub vibe post-9pm.
Press material said Bun House Disco will be an “atmospheric hideaway, reminiscent of Hong Kong’s drinking dens”. Together with food and cocktails will be a soundtrack moving from Canto to synthpop, while interiors have been designed by Z. Diners should expect maroon tiles, dim red lights and disco balls.
On the menu, wontons are to take centre stage, either as prawn or vegetable, and the dumplings will be served hot under various dressings, from black vinegar to dan dan and ginger; plenty of bar snacks and sharing plates, too.
As for drinks, think Cantonese teas, craft beers, and classic cocktails made using Chinese herbs and spices to create new interpretations.
Z said: “Growing up, I always admired the neon lights of 80s disco culture, particularly in Hong Kong and wanted to create a place that captured the spirit of this.
“Shoreditch feels like a natural home for Bun House Disco and gives us the opportunity to embrace the creativity and energy of East London. We can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve been working on for the last couple of years.”
Bun House Disco will open in Shoreditch on November 12. Food will be served from midday. 118 Bethnal Green Road, E2 7EE
