Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli new Arsenal contract stance explained

Arsenal have made an ideal start to their Premier League campaign so far, sitting top of the league after eight games played and only falling to defeat once. Mikel Arteta's young squad have stood up to the tests thrown at them, playing front foot and attacking football while doing so.

It has led to many believing they will be in the title picture as the season progresses, with plenty of their star names continuing to progress at the early stage of their careers. A trio of William Saliba, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are amongst that, with the former showing confidence in his ability in his debut Premier League season, while the latter two have continued to improve on their attacking involvements.

There have been concerns for the long-term future of all three at the club, due to their importance, having only two-years noted as their time remaining on their current contracts. However, football.london understands Arsenal have a club option of an extra year on Saliba and Saka and an extra two-years on the contract of Martinelli.

It's a situation that should ease some fears when it comes to losing any of the key players as a free agent or on a cheap move in the next year or two. That's not to say that Arsenal aren't putting work into offering extensions to those who may need them in the coming months.

That much was confirmed by Arteta, who claimed that work is underway to extend some contracts at the club, saying in his pre-Bodo/Glimt press conference: "We have to plan for the future. We are all working on it, obviously Edu and all the board is on top of it and we will try to do things in the right way, being fair and trying to plan the best possible way to reward the players that, in our opinion, have a big future for the club. When we have something to announce, we will do that."

He then added, when asked if it's less likely that players will run down their contracts: "I think every player is different. What happened in the past, the people had the right reasons and tried something that was beneficial to the club. We will try and do the same thing and make sure that the club is always protected, in a good position to move forward and that the players are happy to be here."
