Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard nominated for PFA Player of the Year in bid to end Arsenal’s decade-long wait

The nominations for the 2023 PFA Player of the Year award are in.

The prestigious gong, voted for by players, has been dominated by Manchester City and Liverpool stars in recent years with Arsenal’s last winner being Robin van Persie in 2012.

That could change this season however with Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard nominated as part of a six-man shortlist for the award.

Arsenal captain Odegaard led the Gunners to an unexpected title charge which saw Saka play in every Premier League game while racking up 14 goals and 11 assists.

Harry Kane is also up for the honour after a superb season at Tottenham, scoring 30 league goals in what turned out to be his last year before signing for Bayern Munich.

Three Manchester City players complete the shortlist following their treble-winning campaign.

Kevin De Bruyne is out to win a record third PFA crown with Erling Haaland likely the favourite following his imperious start to life in English football, and John Stones is also nominated having played a vital role in City’s tactical switch which helped seal them the treble.

No Manchester United players were nominated, meaning Wayne Rooney remains their last player to scoop the award back in 2010.
