A Lidl coffee costing £2.59 a pack has roasted its pricier rivals in a blind taste test.
The budget supermarket’s own label Colombian ground coffee outshone brands costing nearly twice as much, including Taylors and Starbucks.
Volunteers from consumer group Which? rated the brew-at-home coffees on aroma, appearance, flavour and aftertaste.
Lidl came top with a 75% approval rating after two-thirds of tasters said it was “spot-on”.
Sainsbury’s Fairtrade Colombian Coffee was second with 74% while Marks & Spencer and Morrisons’ own-brand coffee both received 73%.
Taylors Colombia San Sebastian ground coffee – which sells for £4.50 per pack – got the lowest rating at 63%.
Two-thirds of testers said it was “too weak”.
Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services, said: “Switching from premium and branded groceries to supermarket own-label versions can be a great way to save money, without having to compromise on quality or taste."
She added: “Coffee is an integral part of many people’s daily routine and single origin coffees are a step up from your everyday instant brew.
"But they can be expensive, so it’s worth choosing carefully to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth.
“For anyone looking to cut back on their spending, switching from premium and branded groceries to the supermarket own-label versions can be a great way to save money, without having to compromise on quality or taste.”
