A lockdown has take effect at Buckingham Palace in London after a man threw suspected shotgun cartridges on the pavement outside the gates.

The individual was put in handcuffs by police at the scene after he was witnessed throwing several items. Media crews assembled in the area were evacuated, and a controlled explosion was then carried out, The Mirror reported.

Police restrictions around the area remain enforced after the man was found to have a "suspicious bag" with him.

It comes only four days before King Charles' Coronation, preparations and rehearsals already planned for this Tuesday evening.

A number of routes in and out of the area had already been restricted from access in preparation.

No shots were fired during the incident, and police have informed that the public are currently "not at risk."

The Metropolitan Police said: "Officers quickly detained a man at around 7pm on Tuesday, May 2, after he approached the gates of Buckingham Palace SW1 and threw a number of items - suspected to be shotgun cartridges - into the Palace grounds.

"These have been recovered and will be taken for specialist examination. There have been no reports of any shots fired, or any injuries."

They added that the man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and will be brought into police custody.

"Cordons are in place after the man was also found to be in possession of a suspicious bag. Specialists are in attendance and will assess the item," their statement read.

Chief Superintendent Joseph McDonald said officers detained the man and he has been taken into police custody.

“There have been no reports of any shots fired, or any injuries to officers or members of the public.

“Officers remain at the scene and further enquiries are ongoing.”
