In the highly competitive world of boxing, every fight matters. And on February 3rd, a significant showdown is set to take place between Joshua Buatsi and Dan Azeez. This bout carries immense importance as it will determine the leading contender in the light-heavyweight division.
Currently, the two rival champions, Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, hold all the major titles in the 175lb weight class. The boxing community eagerly anticipates a potential undisputed championship bout between Beterbiev and Bivol later this year.
However, before that can happen, Buatsi versus Azeez will establish who deserves a shot at the belts held by Bivol and Beterbiev. Both Buatsi and Azeez hail from south London and are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively with the WBA, the same organization that Bivol holds the championship with. Additionally, in the WBC ratings, they are the next highly ranked challengers after Callum Smith, who recently lost to Beterbiev.
The President of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaiman, recognizes the significance of the Buatsi-Azeez fight. He stated, 'It's a very important fight, and that's why it's so exciting. There are many fighters coming up in a variety of weight divisions that capture the imagination of the fans, seeing that in the future, they will be fighting for a world title.'
While all eyes are on Buatsi and Azeez as they compete for the leading contender spot, the Beterbiev versus Bivol fight has not been officially confirmed yet. Sulaiman noted, 'We have not received a sanctioning request for that fight, so before we receive it, it would be speculation. I've seen some media outlets [reporting it], so we will get in contact with the promoters.'
Undisputed champions, such as Beterbiev and Bivol, face challenges in maintaining all their titles due to mandatory commitments and belt fragmentation among different organizations. Sulaiman acknowledges the difficulties and hopes to see changes in the sport that allow undisputed champions to hold their titles for longer periods.
He expressed, 'That gives that special fighter a special status that he can go on and do the things that are doable. Fans, media like undisputed, and that's correct. You want to see who's the best. That's it. Boxing's structure is different, there are four organizations that are recognized.'
Sulaiman's optimism lies in the belief that boxing will continue to evolve in a way that rewards and elevates the accomplishments of great champions. He envisions a future where the outstanding achievements of extraordinary fighters like Beterbiev and Bivol are recognized on a different level, considering the countless years of dedication it takes to reach such heights.
The upcoming clash between Buatsi and Azeez will undoubtedly have significant implications for the light-heavyweight division. As boxing enthusiasts, we eagerly await the outcome of this thrilling matchup. Be sure to tune in on February 3rd to witness this pivotal moment in the sport.
