Bruno Guimaraes sends clear message to Newcastle bosses over Matt Targett future

Matt Targett admits he wants to stay with Newcastle United beyond the summer after a stellar performance during Monday's 2-0 win over Arsenal - and it seems Bruno Guimaraes wants his team-mate to stick around too.

Targett kept Bukayo Saka and his fellow Arsenal attackers quiet throughout what was a memorable night at St. James' Park but questions still remain as to whether he will stay with the Magpies beyond the summer.

Newcastle have a £15m option to buy clause in the loan agreement with Aston Villa but it is unclear if they intend to use it. Steven Gerrard may also try and tempt the player back to the Midlands by urging him to at least give pre-season a try before making a decision.

But Targett knows what he wants and made that abundantly clear after the final home game of the season. Guimaraes too felt it was necessary to share his thoughts, urging Newcastle to keep the left-back.

"The crowd was electric today and that fed down to the pitch. We were feeding off that and that was probably our best performance of the second half of the season," Targett told NUFC TV.

Guimaraes then appeared behind his Newcastle team-mate to interrupt the interview. "He needs to stay!" the Brazilian bellowed down the camera.

"I think everyone knows what I want!" Targett joked after Guimaraes' intervention. "It's up to the club. It's a massive project, an exciting project and I think everyone wants to be a part of it."

Speculation is rife that Newcastle will eye a new left-back in the summer with Atletico Madrid star Renan Lodi just one name tipped to make the move to Tyneside before August. However, Eddie Howe has been impressed by Targett since his January switch.

“He’s fitted into the team and the group very well. He’s been very consistent with his performances," he said recently. “He’s done very well and we’re very pleased with him.”
