After appearing in three summer league games so far, Bronny James is clearly a work in progress. He has shot just 6-of-26 from the field and 0-of-12 from 3-point range, and while he had played some effective defense at times, he has lots of work to do before he can be a serviceable NBA player.
New Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick admitted that James is a “development player” and that the second-round draft pick will likely have to spend some time in the G League. James himself seemed to acknowledge that after the Lakers’ most recent summer league game.

“I’m just looking forward to any basketball I play, no matter what level I’m playing at,” James said after the Lakers’ 99-80 loss to the Houston Rockets in Los Angeles’ opening game in the Las Vegas Summer League on Friday.
In that loss on Friday to Houston, the son of LeBron James was more aggressive offensively than he was in prior games, but he still didn’t find his rhythm in terms of hitting shots. He made just three of his 14 shot attempts while missing all eight of his attempts from downtown, and he finished with eight points, five rebounds, two steals and three turnovers in 27 minutes.
The Lakers’ next summer league game will take place on Monday against the Boston Celtics. You can see the entire schedule here.
