Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has brought several former members of the New Orleans Saints’ coaching staff with him to Denver, as well as numerous ex-Saints players.
That trend will likely continue, and a notable name to watch this offseason will be do-it-all tight end Taysom Hill.
Hill, 33, is 7-2 as a starting quarterback in his career, but the Broncos could primarily use him as a short-yardage and goal-line option, two areas where the team needs improvement going into the 2024 campaign.
In seven seasons with the Saints (five under Payton), Hill has totaled 5,710 all-purpose yards and scored 49 touchdowns. Denver’s offense could certainly use another weapon in the red zone.
With just six draft picks, the Broncos don’t really have the draft capital to trade for Hill (or the cap space for his current contract). But if the Saints decide to part ways with Hill, Denver would be an obvious potential landing spot.
New Orleans will have a new offensive coordinator this year, and while any coach could find a use for Hill, it remains to be seen whether his role will justify a salary cap hit north of $15.7 million.
As KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis has pointed out, Hill’s $10 million salary in each of the next two years is not guaranteed. So it’s possible that the Saints could release him this spring. Attempting to restructure his contract seems like a more likely scenario.
While a trade seems unlikely, if Hill becomes available this offseason, the Broncos will be a team to watch.
