Broncos’ new pass rush specialist Jamar Cain coached Nik Bonitto in college

The Denver Broncos have a new assistant coach, Jamar Cain, who will serve as a pass rush specialist under defensive coordinator Vance Joseph this season.

Cain, 42, joins the Broncos with 20 years of experience at the college and high school levels. He most recently served as LSU’s defensive line coach in 2022. Before that, Cain coached Oklahoma’s outside linebackers and defensive ends from 2020-2021.

While coaching with the Sooners, Cain overlapped with pass rusher Nik Bonitto, who totaled 26.5 tackles for losses, 16 sacks, three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble in 21 games.

After a productive stint at Oklahoma, Bonitto was selected by Denver in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. His college production did not immediately translate to the NFL as Bonitto was limited to just one tackle behind the line and 1.5 sacks in 15 games as a rookie.

Now reunited with Cain, perhaps Bonitto will be able to take a step forward in the second year of his pro career.

Before coaching at LSU and Oklahoma, Cain previously worked for eight other college football programs and served internships with the Cardinals (2008), Chiefs (2009) and Raiders (2010). He will now take on his first full-time job in the NFL.
