Broncos make Pat Surtain highest-paid defensive back in NFL history

The Denver Broncos have made cornerback Pat Surtain the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history with a four-year contract extension.

Surtain will earn $96 million over four seasons, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, an average of $24 million per year. The deal also includes $77.5 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Surtain, 24, is widely considered the best cornerback in the NFL, and he’s now paid like it. The next-highest-paid players at his position are Jaire Alexander ($21 million), AJ Terrell ($20.25 million), Denzel Ward ($20.1 million) and Jalen Ramsey ($20 million).

Surtain (6-2, 202 pounds) entered the league as the ninth overall pick out of Alabama with the Broncos in 2021. A two-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro, Surtain has totaled 187 tackles, 36 pass breakups and seven interceptions through his first three seasons in the NFL.

Surtain is the second player to get a big extension from Denver’s front office this summer, joining star guard Quinn Meinerz, who received a four-year, $80 million deal in July.

After moving on from Justin Simmons this spring, the Broncos will have a new-look secondary in 2024 featuring Surtain, promising slot cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian, outside cornerback Riley Moss and safeties P.J. Locke and Brandon Jones. View the team’s full depth chart here.
