Broadband users urged to try simple Wi-Fi router trick to boost internet speed

Slow broadband can be a huge pain, whether you are working from home, watching the TV or gaming.

But there is a simple hack that could help increase the download speed, with the simple Wi-Fi router hack something everybody should try. In a bid to help boost speed, Virgin Media have recently sent customers some advice, with one tip incredibly easy no matter which internet provider you use.

The media giant's advice explained: "If your broadband is lagging, our first bit of advice is… to turn your Virgin Media hub off and on again," the company said in an email to customers.

"Yes, really. We know it’s not the most technical “hack” but sometimes the simplest solutions are the most effective!"

Simply find the power button on your router - the flashing box that hooks up to give you your broadband connection - and turn it off.

Wait at least 10 seconds for the router to shut down properly before turning the power back on, reports the Mirror.

Hopefully, the power reset will get rid of any bug that may have been slowing down your connection. Yep, it may be as easy as that!

However, it is best to make sure that no one is home and using the Wi-Fi before rebooting as it can take a while for things to get back in working order - not ideal if your other half is on Zoom call or your wee one is in the middle of a game.

"The hub can take five to 10 minutes to reboot. You’ll know the connection is back up and running when the white light on the front of the hub is on", the Virgin advice explains.

The broadband providers also explained that it is a good ideal to give all the cables plugged into the box a check if there is a problem with your connection.

"While you’re waiting, check over your equipment for faulty or damaged cables, which can cause problems with your network and slow down your internet speed. Also make sure your cables are tightly connected to the hub (finger-tight is all that is required, do not over-tighten as this could break the connector)".

There are plenty of other things that could help increase your broadband speed. For example, make sure your router is not having to battle with obstacles. Keeping your box in a cupboard can block signal.

Keeping your router out of your kitchen and off the floor can also help, with metal object and appliances capable of disrupting Wi-Fi.

Of course, there are plenty of other tips and tricks you can try to boost your broadband speeds.

Firstly make sure the router is out in the open and free from any obstacles - don't pop the box in a cupboard as this will block the signal.

It is also best to keep your router away from water, so pop it away from fish tanks .
