A British woman has died after a mobility scooter she was riding plunged down a steep ravine in the Spanish resort of Benidorm.

The tragedy is understood to have happened about 4.15pm on Wednesday, in Serra Gelada natural park in the Alicante province.

Local news outlets report the woman, 58, was riding a rental electric scooter through the mountainous beauty spot when she fell down a steep hillside.

Full details have yet to be confirmed, but the woman is said to have been travelling to the cross monument on a hilltop in Sierra Gelada - a well-known landmark offering views across the sea and countryside.

Other family members are reported to have been present when the accident happened.

Spanish television station Telecinco says another person - said to have been travelling with the woman on a similar vehicle - was injured while trying to help her.

Firefighters and paramedics were scrambled to the scene, but were unable to save the woman.

Police are said to be investigating the incident, and whether the scooter complied with safety regulations.

The vehicle is understood to have been a motorised mobility scooter. Spanish authorities have been approached for more information.

Benidorm - on Spain’s Costa Blanca - is hugely popular among British tourists, and travel by mobility scooter is favoured by holidayers with low mobility. More than 10 rental businesses across the resort offer visitors the opporunity to hire the vehicles.
