Britney Spears married her fiancé seven months after being freed from her controversial conservatorship — but the ceremony was marred when her ex-husband was arrested for gatecrashing.
The pop star, who was joined at the ceremony by celebrity friends including Paris Hilton, Madonna, Donatella Versace and Drew Barrymore, tied the knot with boyfriend of five years Sam Asghari at their home in Thousand Oaks, California.
Preparations for the ceremony were disturbed when Spears’s former husband Jason Alexander — who she was married to for 55 hours in 2004 before the marriage was annulled — turned up and got into an altercation with security staff. Alexander managed to get inside the event, livestreaming himself as he initially bypassed security before being stopped.
Online followers watched as he scaled a fence and made his way inside the star’s home before he was tackled.
Throughout the video, Alexander can be heard saying he’s Spears’s first husband and that he’s “here to crash the wedding”.
Ventura county sheriff’s department said Alexander, 40, had been charged with two counts of misdemeanour battery, one count of misdemeanour vandalism and one count of misdemeanour trespassing following the incident.
Sergeant Cyrus Zadeh said: “He was able to find his way onto the property and was confronted by security. An altercation occurred with the security officers and that’s where the battery occurred and during the altercation an item was broken so that’s where the vandalism comes into play.
“And by being on private property, the trespass comes into play.”
Sergeant Zadeh said the incident with Alexander had occurred before the wedding took place.
Spears’s attorney Mathew Rosengart said he was working to “ensure Mr Alexander is aggressively prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law”.
The wedding itself saw Spears walk down the aisle in a custom Versace gown while Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love played. Her estranged father Jamie Spears was not present and nor were her mother and sister.
Her teenage sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, wished the couple well despite not attending the wedding.
Spears, 40, met Asghari, 28, in 2016 on the set of her video for her song Slumber Party and they got engaged last September.
It came after a 13-year conservatorship which had controlled her life was terminated by Los Angeles Court in November. Spears had told the court the legal guardianship prevented her from getting married as well as controlling her career and her finances.
Spears had also previously wed Kevin Federline, the father of her sons, in 2004 before they divorced in 2007.
