An 87-year-old British pensioner has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Greece after allegedly trying to suffocate his wife with a pillow.
The pensioner has been accused of attacking his “sick and bedridden” wife on Sunday in their flat in Paleo Faliro, located just outside of Athens.
Local media reported that police were called after the man, thinking she was dead, had gone to a different floor to tell a friend what had happened.
When officers found the 89-year-old woman, she was still alive and lying naked on the bed in the flat, Greek newspaper Proto Thema reported. The pensioner had reportedly told the police that he tried to kill her as she "asked him to and wanted to die".
She was taken to a hospital across the harbour. Her condition remains unknown.
The woman had lived with her husband in the Paleo Faliro area, a seaside neighbourhood located just 6km west of Athens city centre with an estimated population of 63,000.
News of the arrest comes after pensioner David Hunter was jailed in 2022 following the death of his 74-year-old terminally-ill wife.
Retired British miner Hunter had smothered his cancer-stricken wife of 52 years at home in Cyprus.
He told the court at the time that his wife had "cried and begged" him to kill her to end her suffering.
He was cleared of murder and instead convicted of manslaughter.
