A British man in his 50s has died during a climb on Mont Blanc in France.
The man is understood to have been hiking when he plunged 160ft to his death, several news outlets reported on Monday, citing police in the Chamonix region.
He was hiking on a “difficult” track at a spot known as Nid d’Aigle - or ‘eagle’s nest’ - near the Bionnassay glacier when the tragedy happened, reports MailOnline.
Located on the French-Italian border, Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps, and the highest in western Europe.
It rises to 15,774 ft above sea level, and attractes tens of thousands of hikers and skiers annually.
The man’s death comes just a week after a 62-year-old Swiss climber died while trying to rescue two other injured climbers on Mont Blanc massif, on July 2.
A spokesperosn for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in France.”
