A six-year-old British girl was pulled from a Tenerife hotel pool and given mouth-to-mouth recuscitation reportedly nearly an hour after the last lifeguard had finished his shift.
The incident happened at around 6.50pm last Thursday at Granada Park Aparthotel pool in Los Cristianos, 50 minutes after the last lifeguard had clocked off, police said.
Police are now trying to establish where the girl’s parents were at the time of the incident, according to Canarian Weekly.
The girl, who was on holiday with her parents, was rescued from the pool at the holiday complex by other guests and hotel staff.
Rescuers performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on her as soon as she was pulled from the water and the girl was conscious but very scared when the first police officers arrived at the scene, according to reports.
Police said that “within moments” two motorcyclists and two patrol vehicles arrived at the scene, along with a doctor and a first aider.
Ambulances then took the girl to a nearby medical centre.
She was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia, which is caused by someone inhaling liquid into the respiratory tract of the lungs.
Hospital staff were able to stabilise her, but due to the severity of her condition, she has since been transferred to a paediatric emergency department at a university hospital.
Her current condition is unknown.
