British farmer says he tried to warn supermarkets of veg crisis months ago but was ignored

A British farmer says he tried to warn some of the UK's biggest supermarkets that there would be a veg shortage at the start of the year. Steve Cornwell realised there would be a shortfall on a trip to Morocco in January this year but, despite his warnings, he says supermarkets ignored him.

Steve, who is the owner of MCJSC Produce in Waltham Abbey, Essex, was visiting the north African country to see a site where tomatoes are normally ripe and ready for picking in January. But he was left stunned when he realised the produce was nowhere near ripe enough to be shipped.

Unusually hot summer weather followed by a cold snap has badly affected crops is warmer countries, Steve told the Mirror. He says stores are now calling him, desperate to fill empty shelves.
