British Airways and easyJet: Easter holiday chaos as hundreds of flights cancelled due to covid

Over the past few days thousands of holidays have descended into chaos after passengers were forced to scramble to book themselves on another flight.

Two of the UK's largest airlines - easyJet and BA - have been at the centre of the problem with the airline operators cancelling hundreds of flights just days - and in some cases hours - before planes were due to take off.

The news comes at a busy time of the year as families prepare to fly out with their kids as the Eater holidays get underway with reports of two Edinburgh routes being cancelled just today.

The shortages are said to be due to a variety of reasons with covid being one of them. As a result, holidaymakers are reportedly stranded abroad with no explanation or alternative route home offered by the airline.

A spokesman for easyJet said: “As a result of the current high rates of Covid infections across Europe, like all businesses easyJet is experiencing higher than usual levels of employee sickness."

In a bid to get travellers where they need to be, airlines are set to be cancelling routes that fly out multiple times a day with the spokesman adding that the number of cancellations "represents a small proportion" of the total of 1,645 planned for Monday (today).

British Airways are also caught up in the storm too with the operator having to cancel at least 115 flights to or from Heathrow Airport today (April 4) - though not all are said to be down to covid absences.

The update comes after BA recently suffered IT issues causing yet more flights to be cancelled or delayed.

The airline added: "Aviation has been one of the industries worst hit by the pandemic, and airlines and airports are experiencing the same issues rebuilding their operations while managing the continuing impact of Covid."

Taking to social media to vent their frustration one said: "I am absolutely disgusted with the customer service, spoke to a member of staff on the phone who told me there was nobody I could talk to about my complaint about my flight yesterday after having my flight cancelled, absolute joke never flying with BA again"

Simon Rudkins, 50, said he was due to return from a ski trip in the Alps with his family when the airline contacted him with less than 10 hours notice saying their flight was cancelled to which one replied: "10 hours is a luxury. We were given 10 mins notice of cancellation at Gatwick."

A third complained: "Thanks for ruining my Monday @easyJet holiday been booked for a year and now 2 weeks before flying our flight has been cancelled!!"

To check if your flight is affected by delays or cancellations, use easyJet's flight tracker or BA's flight status. Simply enter your flight number, or the airports your flying to/from and this will give you a quick overview of the flight status up to two days in advanced to your scheduled flight.

If your flight is cancelled by the airline, you are entitled to a refund or being booked on an alternative flight to your destination.
