The 50-year-old actor, known for his roles inDoctor Who and Kidulthood, faces two counts of sexual assault, three counts of voyeurism and one count of exposure. The alleged offences are said to have occurred between 2007 and 2016.

The Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charges on Wednesday after detectives submitted a file of evidence following their investigation.

Clarke was first arrested in connection with the case on September 25 last year. Police said the investigation began about a year ago.

The CPS said its prosecutors had determined there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to court and that prosecution was in the public interest.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on October 21 at 10 am BST.

Detective Superintendent Mike Cagney, who is leading the investigation, said the five women connected to the charges continue to receive support from specially trained officers.

He also urged anyone who has experienced sexual assault to report it to police, saying trained investigators were available to provide support and handle information sensitively.

Clarke rose to prominence playing Mickey Smith in Doctor Who between 2005 and 2010. He later worked across the film and television industry as an actor, writer, producer and director.
