Britannia has been voted the worst hotel chain in the UK for the tenth year running.
The hotel chain, which operates three venues in the North East at Newcastle Airport, the Grand Hotel in Gosforth and the Grand Hotel in Sunderland, has now finished in last place in an annual survey from Which? for an entire decade. The consumer group asked thousands of people about their experience at hotel chains across the UK to rank them from best to worst, rating everything from the food and how comfy the beds are to cleanliness and customer service.
Britannia received just two out of a possible five stars in every category to receive an overall score of 56%, with one of the 4,447 members of the public who responded to the survey branding it "absolutely dire, drab and smelly". The verdict from Which? on the once luxurious hotel chain was: "Run-down, dirty and once again the worst hotel chain in the UK", and urged consumers to "avoid at all costs".
On the other end of the table, Premier Inn came out on top among the UK's large hotel chains with an impressive score of 78% and five out of five stars for cleanliness, despite recently hiking its room prices and thus scoring just two stars overall for value. As the cheapest option on the list, Travelodge came near the bottom of the pile - receiving a poor rating for value for money despite its low prices and earning just one star out of five for its food and drink.
