Bristol City defender completes transfer to Barnsley after signing a two-year deal

Robbie Cundy has completed his move to Barnsley, signing a two-year deal with the League One side.

The centre-back underwent a medical at the club yesterday and teams up with manager Michael Duff following his appointment as The Tykes' manager last week.

The 25-year-old ends his three-year spell with Bristol City after failing to sign a new contract. His current deal expires at the end of June and he turned down the latest offer despite his first-team involvement towards the end of last season.

Cundy told Barnsley's official site of his move: “I’m delighted to be here. It’s been in the pipeline for a few weeks now. I’m happy to get it over the line and I can’t wait to get started.

“First and foremost, I’m a defender. I’m going to win my headers. I like to play out when I can and hopefully, we can do that this season.”

Barnsley FC CEO, Khaled El-Ahmad added: “We are happy that we have secured Robbie’s services, despite interest from other clubs. Robbie brings Championship experience with him and provides us with another option in the defensive positions.

"He has proven in the past that he can overcome adversity and will add leadership qualities to the group. We wish him the best of luck in his time here at Oakwell.”

Bristol Live confirmed on Tuesday that Cundy was on the verge of signing for Barnsley with the decision likely to have come down to playing assurances.

Cundy joined BS3 from Bath City in 2019 and had four different loan spells with Exeter, Torquay, Cambridge and Gillingham. He had to wait three years to make his full debut for City, coming in the 1-0 victory at Blackburn in March.

In the absence of the injured Tomas Kalas, Cundy then went on to make 10 league starts on the right side of a defensive three earning the praise of manager Nigel Pearson for his string of consistent performances.

After being told he was free to leave in January, Cundy's City future looked to have taken a U-turn when he was offered a contract however with Timm Klose signing an extension and Kal Naismith arriving, opportunities week-in-week-out may have been few and far between.

At the age of 25, Cundy will feel he needs regular first-team football having had to bide his time and remain patient to get his chance at City but the move to Barnsley will provide him with regular football in a promotion-chasing side.

Cundy's had nine different loan spells throughout his career across Non-League, League Two and League One. He also suffered a serious knee injury - fracturing the cartilage in his left knee during his last loan spell with Gillingham that sidelined him for around seven months.

Duff has been a big fan of the defender while he was playing at Bath and watched him in action at the club's Twerton Park ground.

He becomes the third departure of the summer after Callum O'Dowda's free transfer to Cardiff and Kasey Palmer's deal to Coventry on Tuesday.
