Bristol Airport traffic: A38 to close for resurfacing with 32km diversion in place

Drivers travelling to Bristol Airport this morning (Tuesday, August 9) should be prepared to allow additional journey time as a stretch of the A38 closes for resurfacing roadworks.

The A38 South of Bristol Airport between Ashey Lane and New Road will be closed for the majority of today. North Somerset Council has imposed the one-day closure to allow for carriageway sealing works to be carried out.

The route will be closed from 6am until 4pm on Tuesday, August 9, meaning that motorists will be diverted throughout the duration. Traffic heading towards Bristol Airport, particularly from the South of England coming off of the M5, is likely to be affected.

A 32km diversion route has been imposed by the Council which is estimated to add an additional 36 minutes to your original journey time. Drivers will be asked to head towards the A370 and follow the diversion signs before re-connecting with the A38.

The reason for the length of the diversion is because, as the closure is on an A-road, any official alternative route must use the same or higher class of road.

While there are a number of shorter, unofficial routes that drivers can take to bypass the closure, these are not suitable for HGVs and should be avoided if using larger machinery.

The First Bus service U2 will also be impacted as a result of the temporary closure. The service towards Langford will operate as usual until the Lime Kiln roundabout but instead of joining the A38 it will go back down Colliters Way and join the A370 as far as Congresbury and then turn left into the High Street.

Service U2 heading towards Bristol will operate the reverse of the above and due to the length of time it will take to do the diversion route there may be some delays to the original timetable.
