Bristol Airport: Several flights diverted away from city as storms hit region

Several flights were diverted away from Bristol Airport as thunderstorms enveloped the region on Tuesday (August 16). The airport confirmed that three arriving flights were redirected to other airports due to poor weather conditions for landing in Bristol.

Two Ryanair flights from Tenerife and Lanzarote - flight numbers FR 4754 and FR 4756 respectively - were diverted to Birmingham Airport. A KLM flight arriving from Amsterdam, flight number KL 1053, was redirected to Cardiff Airport.

Outbound flights leaving Bristol Airport so far remain unaffected by the weather conditions. Passengers have been advised to speak to their airline for updates and look at the departures and arrival boards on its website.

A spokesperson for Bristol Airport said: “A small number of flights were diverted earlier today due to the weather conditions. We are working with our airline partners to communicate the latest flight information to customers as soon as it becomes available. Passengers travelling today should keep an eye out for updates from their airline and can view our departures board online.”

It is not clear whether the flights will reattempt to land at Bristol Airport. Passengers travelling on redirected flights are advised to liaise with the airlines on transport after landing.

After a period of hot weather, thunderstorms have been rolling across the south west from the English Channel. The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning which covers just about the whole of England and Wales, which is expected to extend into Wednesday (August 17).

Lightning was spotted across Bristol this afternoon and thunder rumbled over the city and across Somerset. Footage shows downpours of rain in Bedminster and Brislington while a key route in south Bristol has been blocked off due to the weather.
