Bridget Jones's Diary costume designer shares Renée Zellweger's bunny outfit demands

English fashion designer Esme Young has spoken about creating the iconic Bridget Jones's Diary bunny outfit worn by Renée Zellweger in the hit 2001 romantic comedy.

In the Richard Curtis-adapted film the blonde bombshell decked out in the racy costume complete with ears and fluffy tail at what she thought was a Tarts and Vicars party.

But the theme had been cancelled, leaving only Bridget in a busty get-up, which fashion designer Esme created for the American star, now aged 52.

Esme detailed the creation of the iconic look during an appearance on ITV ’s This Morning with co-hosts Vernon Kay and Josie Gibson, who are standing in for Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield during the Easter break.

Esme explained Renée wanted the bodycon black bunny outfit to be "tighter and tighter and tighter".

She continued: "In fact, it was so tight she couldn’t sit down. The reason she wanted it tighter is because her character wasn’t really skinny, so she wanted the cleavage."

Josie asked: “Did you have to cut her out of it then?”

Esme replied: "She only had it on one time and then that was it.

"But, I had a little exhibition I was doing and I asked if I could put the costume in it and they said yes, but they couldn’t find it."

Esme then explained her suspicions that the iconic costume, with bunny ears and a tail, had been "stolen" from the set.

Vernon replied: "Oh no, it will probably be on one of those auction sites where you see props from movies and stuff."

Since her starring role as Bridget Jones, Renée has moved away from romantic comedies, most recently transforming into serial killer Pam Hupp for an upcoming NBC series.

The true crime drama The Thing About Pam will detail the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria, whose husband Russ was initially wrongly convicted for the killing.

After he was exonerated, Hupp became implicated in the murder and she was charged with first-degree murder in July last year.

Betsy’s husband Russell was originally accused of the murder, but he was released from prison and awarded more than £1 million in compensation. It’s thought that Pam framed him for the crime.

In the new series - which is set to air next month - her face was transformed by prosthetics to give her a larger jaw and bigger nose, and her hair was styled into a bright blonde bob.

The Texan-born star of Chicago, Cold Mountain and Jerry Maguire, who gained two stone to play Bridget, has previously said she doesn't want to change her shape for a role again.

“My body is whacked,” she admitted, after years of yo-yo dieting, and rapid loss and gain.

“I had a panic attack with all the specialists talking about how bad this is for you, long term, putting on that much weight in short periods of time and they're all saying, 'You must stop or you’re going to die'."
