Brendan Rodgers is set to make the most of Celtic’s foothold in the Far East as the new Hoops boss prepares to bring his own style to Parkhead.
Incoming gaffer Rodgers is preparing for his big unveiling in Glasgow on Friday. And the ball is already rolling in the search for new talent – with the Asian market exploited under former manager Ange Postecoglou remaining an area Celts are targeting. It is understood Hoops chiefs have already made initial contact with South Korean side Gangwon regarding winger Yang Hyun-jun. And Record Sport believes Celtic are also scouting Gwangju pair Eom Ji-sung and Jeong Ho-yeon in the K-League.
Gangwon are determined to keep hold of Yang for their bid to beat the drop in the remaining half of the league campaign. Club director Kim Tae-joo said: “It is true Celtic has received a scouting offer for Yang Hyun-jun. No, we will not transfer Yang this summer. The transfer fee is not a big problem. However, the priority is to consider the current team situation.
“We also conveyed the position we wouldn’t release Yang to Celtic for six months and then send him in the winter but Celtic is sticking to the position of wanting to recruit Yang during this summer.”
It is understood Celts could unite the frontman with striker Oh Hyeon-gyu in the long-term if they can thrash out a six-month loan-back deal. Parkhead chiefs are poised to continue mining the Asian market.
