Two men have died after a crash near a major junction on the M25 in which a car overturned.
It happened near to junction eight near to Reigate in the early hours of Thursday morning when a car is understood to have crashed into a lamppost on the central reservation.
Paramedics rushed to the scene on the anti-clockwise carriageway where two men aged 31 and 28 were tragically pronounced dead.
Two other men were meanwhile taken to hospital with serious injuries, Surrey Police said.
The crash, which police confirmed involved one vehicle, resulted in the major motorway being closed between junctions eight and six, leading to queues of up to five miles.
The force urged motorists to avoid the area this morning as it appealed for witnesses to the tragic crash, which happened around 3am.
In an official statement, a Surrey Police spokesperson said: “A 31-year-old man and 28-year-old man have sadly died at the scene.
"Two other men have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.”
They added: “Surrey Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal road traffic collision on the M25 at Bletchingley at around 3am today (February 23).
“The collision, involving one vehicle, took place near the junction with the M23.”
Queues were reported on both carriages of the orbital motorway, with delays of up to 90 minutes according to traffic service INRIX.
There were also queues clockwise for a couple of miles before junction six.
A diversion route has since been set up to ease some of the traffic.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: "The anti-clockwise carriageway is expected to remain closed throughout this morning.
"There are currently 4 miles of congestion on approach to the closure causing 90-minute delays above normal travel time. Traffic Officers have installed a strategic diversion route."
