Nottingham Forest confirm striker transfer just before deadline

Nottingham Forest have confirmed the transfer deadline day signing of striker Sam Surridge from Stoke City.

The 23-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Reds, joining for an undisclosed fee, which is believed to be about £2.2million.

Surridge’s move to the City Ground sees him reunited with head coach Steve Cooper, with the pair having worked together at Swansea City.

The front man joined the Potters from Bournemouth in the summer, but has had a stop-start first half of the season. He has scored four goals in 24 appearances so far this term.

Surridge came up through the ranks at the Cherries, having loan spells at Weymouth, Poole Town, Yeovil Town, Oldham Athletic and the Swans before his switch the Stoke last year.

His arrival comes as Forest wait to find out the extent of an ankle injury to top scorer Lewis Grabban.

The Reds marksman left the Cardiff City Stadium wearing a protective boot and due to undergo a scan, having been clattered into by Will Vaulks.

He had to be helped off the pitch, being supported on either side, and was unable to put any weight on his foot as he headed straight down the tunnel towards the end of Forest’s 2-1 defeat to the Bluebirds.

Cooper had been keen to strengthen his attacking resources before that, and bolstering his options only took on greater priority with Grabban’s injury.

Surridge follows the arrivals of fellow forward Keinan Davis, on loan from Aston Villa, centre-back Steve Cook and full-back Richie Laryea on the banks of the Trent this month.

He was believed to have been close to joining Cardiff on loan, before the Reds intervened to secure his signature just hours before the 11pm January deadline.
