Mohamed Elneny signs short-term Arsenal contract extension amid Mikel Arteta squad rebuild

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has signed a short-term contract extension with the club.

The Egyptian international's deal was due to expire at the end of next month although he has now penned a fresh one-year deal, with an option to extend. The 30-year-old was spotted by football.london following the 5-1 victory over Everton on Sunday with a pen in his hand and a piece of paper in front of him posing for pictures with the club photographer and the club have now officially announced his new contract, something he is extremely pleased with.

"I love this club and I feel like part of this family," Elneny told Arsenal Media. "I want to continue at this amazing club and amazing family and I’m very happy and very excited for the future."

The former Basel star joined the club back in January 2015 and has since featured for the Gunners 147 times, notching five goals and ten assists in the process. Despite barely featuring in the first half of the season, Elneny proved to be one of Mikel Arteta's most consistent performers during the final stretches of the campaign, starting the final seven Premier League fixtures following Thomas Partey's thigh injury.

Elneny's new deal means that strikers Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette are now the only two first-team players that have contracts set to expire at the end of June. Like the Egyptian, Nketiah featured prominently during the final months of the 2021/22 campaign, netting five league goals in just eight starts.
