Heathrow 'total chaos' as flights cancelled over 'too many passengers' at airport

More flights from Heathrow Airport have been cancelled this morning due to the airport having more passengers that its capacity allows.

At least 30 flights have been scrapped or moved from the London travel hub today, with hundreds of passengers likely to be affected.

Last night the airport's bosses told 20 of its biggest carriers to move 30 flights from today's morning slot, it has been reported.

They had realised that the terminals would not be able to cope with the high number of passengers coming through.

At least 5,000 travellers are understood to have been impacted this morning.

Would-be passengers would found themselves bumped off their flights took to social media to express their anger.

"Total chaos at Heathrow this morning," one tweeted, "BA flights cancelled and zero customer service!"

Another person said they had left home at 3.30am, checked their flight, and then arrived several hours later to discover their plane was not flying.

They called Terminal 5 a "disgraceful shambles".

Today's events are the latest in a long line of chaotic incidents at UK airports since the spring, with huge lines for security and hundreds of cancellations at the likes of Birmingham Airport, Manchester Airport and Gatwick.

Heathrow has been one of the less affected airports so far.

A Heathrow spokesperson said: “We are expecting higher passenger numbers in today’s morning peak than the airport currently has capacity to serve, and so to keep everyone safe we have asked airlines to remove 30 flights from the morning peak for today only.

"We will work with airlines to get affected passengers rebooked onto other flights outside of the peak so that as many as possible can get away, and we apologise for the impact this has on travel plans.

"We are working hard to ensure everyone has a smooth journey through Heathrow this summer, and the most important thing is to make sure that all service providers at the airport have enough resources to meet demand.”
