Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil announces retirement from football after 18-year career

Former Arsenal and Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil has announced his retirement from football. The German playmaker spent eight years at the Emirates Stadium after completing a £42.5million move to north London from Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2013.

Ozil played a key role in helping the Gunners win four FA Cup titles before joining Fenerbache in 2021. The 34-year-old has endured a difficult end to his glittering career after being hampered by injuries before confirming his decision to retire from the game.

Ozil announced his retirement with a statement on social media. The statement read: "After thoughtful consideration, I'm announcing my immediate retirement from professional football.
