Car crashes through busy day care centre as emergency services scramble to scene

A car has crashed through a busy day care centre in Chicago leaving two adults and a four-year-old child in hospital.

The Chicago Fire Department said a 34-year-old man was driving a Honda mini-van when he lost control and struck the building on Friday morning.

The driver sustained minor injuries and a four-year-old boy who was also in the van was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital for treatment.

A 39-year-old woman who was inside the building was transported to hospital for an evaluation.

None of the injuries are reported to be life threatening, according to authorities.

The crash occurred just before most of the children were scheduled to attend the day care centre, local reports have suggested.

A neighbour told the Chicago Times: "We’re going to get everything fixed... and probably get some barriers up front...just in case something like that happens (again).

"You can never guess that somebody is going to accidentally hit the accelerator.”

Emergency services are at the scene trying to remove the car and cordon off the day centre.

The crash comes just days after a mum was killed and her six-year-old daughter was seriously injured when a pickup truck hit them while walking in the street.

Cops said a 35-year-old woman and a six-year-old girl were walking along the pavement in Los Angeles, US, when they were struck by the truck which then smashed into a two-storey apartment building.

The horrific accident happened around 8am in Mid Wilshire, Los Angeles, near Hancock Park Elementary School on Tuesday.

The schoolgirl was rushed to hospital in a critical condition while the woman was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

LA Unified Superintendent of schools Alberto Carvalho said in a statement: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who was involved in or witnessed the horrific traffic accident near Hancock Park Elementary School this morning.

"We send our sincerest condolences to the entire school community and have mental health counsellors available on site for students and employees."

Video from the scene shows police tape blocking crossings as a white tent can be seen outside an apartment building with debris in the road.

A statement from Los Angeles Fire Department said: "A vehicle struck two pedestrians (approx 6-year-old female & 35-year-old female) and then collided with a structure (two-storey apartment).

"The adult female was sadly found to be deceased on scene. The young girl was transported in critical condition.

"The driver (approx 30-year-old male) was transported in moderate condition.

"No one was trapped. Unknown extent of damage to the structure."
