Brazen Edinburgh bistro thief caught on camera stealing laptop before strolling out

Edinburgh restaurant bosses have been left furious after a thief brazenly walked in and stole a colleague's laptop and phone while he was on a break.

The theft happened at the Noon Bar and Bistro on Waterloo Place as the staff member leaves the table momentarily to help a customer, As he does, a sneak thief goes to his table, takes his laptop and phone and walks out of the bistro.

CCTV footage of the brazen daylight theft emerged from the restaurant, showing the man lifting the electronic equipment before walking out of the shop.

Considerate restaurant bosses have decided to buy their colleague a new laptop and mobile phone.

One of the eatery owners said: “We are shocked at what happened. Our employee was on a meal break and was answering personal emails etc on his personal laptop and left his phone next to the laptop. A customer needed assistance and our employee got up to assist and 30 seconds later the guy took his laptop and apple phone.

“As it’s unlikely to be recovered, we will be buying our employee a new laptop and mobile phone.

“Hospitality businesses are struggling due to significant rising food & drink costs, significant drop in footfall in Edinburgh due to many issues and this is just another bit of bad news. We only hope trade will pick up workers go back to offices, council workers go back to offices as well as government officials as we need more office workers back at work and having lunch breaks”

A Police Scotland Spokesperson said: “Enquiries are ongoing following a theft of electronic equipment from a restaurant in Waterloo Place, Edinburgh on Tuesday, 21 June 2022.”
