People having a stroke caused by bleeding in the brain reached hospitals faster than people with clot-caused strokes, but once there, they were somewhat less likely to receive key early steps on time. That is the central finding of a cohort study published in JAMA Network Open on Oct. 19.
Researchers analyzed records of 195,659 stroke patients who arrived by ambulance at 195 U.S. hospitals between January 2015 and June 2024. After accounting for stroke severity, medical history, and hospital factors, patients with bleeding strokes had 9% lower odds of having a brain scan ordered within 20 minutes of arrival and 6% lower odds of being seen by an emergency physician within 10 minutes.
